Silver Line Charity

The Silver Line Charity was founded a few years ago by Dame Esther Rantzen (who also set up Childline). It is a free 24/7 helpline for older people - offering a befriending service both on the phone and by letter to combat loneliness. It is also a simple signposting service linking people to services they may need and not be aware exist, including for those suffering abuse. So far 3000 Silver Line Volunteers make regular friendship calls to older people and the charity receive over 10,000 calls a week. I hear that these numbers are only going up, and the charity really is having a great impact on a lot of people. Here is their website:

Supporting Coalville

The Ripple Pond

is a self help support network for the families of physically and emotionally injured service personnel and veterans.  They organise small self help groups where you can speak with others who have similar experiences. W: E: T: 01252 913021 

Ashby Dementia Support Group 

An informal social group for dementia sufferers and their carers.  Meeting Friday afternoons 2-3.30pm at La Zouch Coffee House (if you are caring for someone and would like to meet people in similar circumstances for a friendly get together contact Sue on 01530 414885 for more details)

Alzheimer's Society, Leicestershire and Rutland  – Memory Support Service

Provides information, signposting and support across Leicestershire to

  • those diagnosed with dementia
  • those who care for people with dementia
  • anyone concerned for someone who may not have been diagnosed

Home visits from a Dementia Support Worker can be requested. A telephone helpline is also available.

The Ashby Support Cafe

A friendly drop-in support group for anyone affected by a life limiting illness.  Meeting Every Friday 1.30-4pm at Legion House, South Street.  

The Support Cafe offers a welcoming environment with easy access.  Open to patients, their family members and carers, the cafe offers the opportunity to relax, take a break, meet new people and get support. 

There's no need to book, just drop in?  The Support Cafe is completely free.

Burton on Trent Fibromyalgia Support Group 

Covering Burton and surrounding areas.  

If you have fibromyaliga we are here to support you, come and join us and spend some time with friendly people who understand just how you feel

They meet once a month at Burton Library 10.30-12.30

Ashby Bereavement Help Point

1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month 6.00pm-7.30pm

2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month 10.00am-12.00pm

They offer a supportive environment to anyone who is experiencing or has experienced bereavement irrespective of the type of bereavement or when the person died.

You can drop in for a short time or stay for the whole session, it is very informal.  You will meet other people who have had a significant loss and there will be bereavement support volunteers on hand to listen and offer advice and information on both emotional and practical concerns.

Diabetes UK - Coalville Diabetes Group - Open Meeting 

New community support group in the Coalville area open to anybody affected by diabetes.  The mission of the group is provide a regular meeting place for people affected by diabetes and to share information and experiences.
